Slaughterhouse of Horrors

Kermit Gosnell, a 72 year old doctor in Philadelphia, is on trial for murder.  He is accused of using “unfathomable abortion procedures on inner-city patients who were well into their third trimester at an unsanitary, bloody, and utterly gruesome clinic called the Women’s Medical Society.” He is charged with eight murders, seven of them newborn infants and one, a Nepalese refugee, but the exact number of deaths is unknown considering his two women’s clinics have been opened for decades.

This is something you see in a movie or read in a novel.  Gosnell sadistically brutalized his patients, physically forcing some of them to have abortions in his office.  His way of killing off the fetuses was by snipping their spinal cords with scissors.

Abortion is a difficult enough choice to make without debasing and victimizing the women who have struggled to come to this decision.  I am disgusted, horrified and outraged by the fact this was even possible in our society today.

Should this man truly be considered an “abortion doctor”? First of all, he’s not licensed to practice obstetrics or gynecology, which makes the story more horrifying.  Some might ask, “Why didn’t the women just go out and get early term abortions?” Gosnell preyed on poor inner-city women and immigrants. Maybe a contributing factor was a lack of funds to pay for a legitimate abortion, in a sterile medical environment, overseen by an accredited medical expert.  The going rate for the procedure these days in the state of Pennsylvania is $360 with local sedation and $400 with conscious sedation, if you get it done within four to eleven weeks of your last menstrual period. Alas, this was not a factor.  The clinic was allegedly charging $1600-$3000 for late term abortions.

Throughout the years women continued seeking his services, and not at a discounted rate.  Employees waited years to come forward with their gruesome tales.  The clinic hadn’t been inspected since 1993, which is when city officials ceased performing them so “women wouldn’t face extra barriers when getting abortions.” This is despicable failure on all levels.

An aside to this story, it was the illegal prescription racket the doctor and staff had going on, in addition to the modern day slaughterhouse of horrors, which actually led to the 2010 FBI raid that busted Gosnell.  It took a drug raid and not the repeated complaints of former patients?

This is what the FBI found upon entering the facility, “there was blood on the floor. A stench of urine filled the air. A flea-infested cat was wandering through the facility, and there were cat feces on the stairs. Semi-conscious women scheduled for abortions were moaning in the waiting room or the recovery room, where they sat on dirty recliners covered with blood-stained blankets.”

That shows where our government’s priorities lay, and it doesn’t appear to be with the ethical and humane treatment of women, well maybe just not the poor inner-city ones. All I can ask is why?

  1. What’s really interesting is how anti-abortion activists have latched onto this story as evidence that there’s the cover-up in the liberal media because the Gosnell story is not bigger than it is. Do a quick Google search and you’ll turn up plenty of conspiracy theories!

    • I already did. Interesting? It’s ridiculous. I just posted an article to fb yesterday referring to the supposed cover-up. If anything it just supports pro-choice efforts. If this place was as bad as it was “legal” I wouldn’t even want to imagine the alternative.
